The state metallurgical and metalworking plant named in honour of Peter the Great`s wife, Empress Catherine I , and the patroness of mountain crafts Sacred Catherine was started up on the banks of the Iset River that day. Having born as the industrial centre of the Urals and Siberia Ekaterinburg also became the centre of a scientific, educational, and cultural idea of Russia for three centuries of the history.
